Hello!

Sheila here. Mother of five, now young adults, a high school senior photographer, and a seasoned veteran in the art of juggling life's many responsibilities. I've seen my fair share of high school seniors transition into their freshman year of college, and I've been there to capture their last moments of high school life through my lens. But my role doesn't end there. As a mom, I've also been the guiding hand, helping my own kids pack their bags and prepare for the exciting journey of college life.

Today, I want to share with you a topic that's close to my heart and very much relevant to the season - dorm room necessities. Yes, you heard it right! As we bid adieu to the high school years and step into the world of dorm rooms and college campuses, it's essential to know what to pack. From the must-haves to the nice-to-haves, I'll be sharing my insights and tips on how to make your dorm room not just a place to sleep, but a comfortable, cozy, and personalized space that feels like home. So, whether you're a soon-to-be college freshman, a parent, or just someone looking for some practical advice, stick around. This post is for you!

Knowing where to start can be so overwhelming!  Here is a list I've complied of necessities and of course a few fun things thrown in there!

As an Amazon Associate I do earn from qualifying purchases. Thank you for your support!

  • Bedding: This includes sheets, pillows, a comforter, and possibly a mattress topper for added comfort.

Make sure to check bed sizes!!! A lot of dorm rooms have extra long twin size mattresses. You should get detailed info once you get your dorm assignment. (Double Click Photo to get link)

  • Towels: You'll need both bath towels and hand towels. Don't forget a beach towel for those trips to the pool or beach! Speaking of the beach if you in a beach collage town check out his list!

  • Laundry Supplies: A laundry bag or basket, detergent, and dryer sheets (or these fun little wool balls) are all necessary. This might be something you hold off on, until you see how much space you have. I do love the collapsible hamper with a handle for this reason, it will fit anywhere. Also these eco friendly sheets take up way less space then a giant jug of detergent. Bonus, better for the environment! Another bonus you can sign up for subscribe and save so they never run out! No excuse to not clean those sheets!

  • Closet Organizers: Space is often limited in dorm rooms, so closet organizers can help you make the most of it. Definitely wait until you see or get dimensions for this one! Here are a few handy items I've even used at home in my closet.

Hanging Organizers

Plastic Tubs

  • Desk Supplies: This includes pens, pencils, notebooks, sticky notes, and a desk lamp. Also check this list of back to school supplies.

Remember to keep these small, the space you have shrinks up real quick once you start bringing everything in. Also most of these items can be found at the campus store once you get into your classes and see what you need.

  • Electronics: Don't forget your laptop, phone, chargers, and possibly a printer or an extra monitor for studying. You should get a list of approved electronics, most dorms are very specific about what's allowed. Dont forget the power strip!

  • Kitchen Essentials: Even if you're on a meal plan, you might want a mini fridge, microwave, and some basic utensils.

Kitchen Basics

  • Shower Caddy: This is essential for carrying your toiletries to and from the communal bathroom. Some flip flops may be a good ideas too!

  • First Aid Kit: Include basics like band-aids, pain relievers, and any necessary prescription medications. I also sent some basic essential oils and 3 of the most used items in my medicine cabinet Neosporin, Hydrocortisone and Arnica

  • Trash Can: A small one will usually do the trick. One with a lid is a good idea unless your child is very tidy and will take out daily. We have the auto lid cans in our bathroom and they still scare almost overtime I accidentally go over it.

  • Cleaning Supplies: Some disinfecting wipes, a mini vacuum, and a duster will keep your room clean.

  • Fan: Depending on your dorm's AC situation, a fan can be a lifesaver.

  • Storage Solutions: Think under-bed storage bins, over-the-door hooks, and stackable drawers.

  • Comfort Items: Photos from home, a cozy blanket, or a favorite mug can make your space feel more personal. I love love love this digital frame that has a cloud based upload system. You can update from home as a sweet surprise!

  1. Noise-Canceling Headphones: For those times when you need to focus, even if your roommate is being noisy. My personal favorites are the apple Apple Air Pods but for the kid that loses everything you might want to go with something bigger. Like these beats.

  • Backpack or Tote: For carrying books to class, the library, or study sessions.

Health Snacks!

I would mail these every couple of weeks!

I hope you find this list helpful! If you've thought of something I've missed I would've to hear your ideas! Big hugs and best of luck!
